The Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area (FFNHA) “Bus on Us” grant program is designed to assist educators and schools with the cost of transportation to field trips within the heritage area that also align with the themes of Freedom’s Frontier (Missouri Kansas Border War, Shaping the Frontier, and Struggles for Freedom).


All Freedom's Frontier partners in the 41 counties are eligible to participate in the Bus on Us program, so long as they register their school program offerings with Freedom's Frontier. To register, please send me the following:

A one paragraph description of each of your current school offerings. Please include the grade level it serves as well as how it aligns with the themes of Freedom's Frontier.


All registered partners are welcome to advertise this program at their sites and with educators. The below two flyers are approved to use for promotion. If the partner site would like to advertise on their own, that is fine too but the information must not be different than the information posted on the Freedom's Frontier website. There is one flyer below that has generic Heritage Area education program pictures. The second flyer has no pictures and can be modified to include pictures of education programs at your site.

Who is Eligible?
An accredited PreK-12 public, private, or charter school  who would like to discover and explore the themes of the heritage area. Only one grant per classroom will be awarded within each grant cycle (school year). Due to the uncertainty of Federal Funding, as of January 2017 we are not accepting applications from schools located outside the 41 counties of Freedom's Frontier. 

What Field Trips are Eligible?
Any registered field trip related to the Freedom’s Frontier themes and located within the 41 counties of the heritage area are eligible for 75% of funding towards transportation. A list of these field trip opportunities can be found here. Other destinations, shall be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

How are the Grants Approved?
The FFNHA “Bus on Us” grant program is managed by the FFNHA Youth and Education Coordinator. Grants will be awarded to complete and approved applications on a first come, first serve basis until all funding for that grant cycle is depleted. A notice will be made on the FFNHA website when the current funding has been depleted for that grant cycle.

Download an application. Complete the application and submit to the Youth and Education Coordinator. Educators will be notified of their grant status by email within two weeks of submitting the application. Applications must be submitted prior to the date of the field trip. 

To be eligible for a “Bus on Us” grant, educators must complete an application and submit to the Youth and Education Coordinator. To receive reimbursement for the transportation, educators must submit both an Invoice and a Close- Out Report to the Youth and Education Coordinator within 14 calendar days of the field trip. If either of these forms is not submitted on time, reimbursement shall not be released. Educators and schools are also responsible for paying 25% of the transportation.
Within two weeks of the scheduled field trip, educators must submit an invoice for the cost of the transportation as well as a completed evaluation.
