Free workshop invites discussions about dementia-inclusive and caregiver-friendly programs

Museums store memories. They are the ideal places for welcoming people with memory loss. Shawnee Town 1929 Museum, Town Hall, 11600 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas, is offering museum directors, staff and volunteers an educational and experiential, free workshop on Tuesday, October 24, 8:30 a.m.-33:30 p.m. The workshop explores how Museums Build Community through Dementia-Inclusive and Caregiver-Friendly Programs:

  • What role can museums play in engaging persons with memory loss and their caregivers?
  • How can museum programming be modified through awareness, understanding and sensitivity to the needs and interests of
  • persons living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers?
  • What is the potential impact for dementia-inclusive programming to extend meaningful community outreach?


Presenters include professionals in health and wellness, leaders in the field of creative aging, specialists who
work with caregivers and persons living with Alzheimer’s, and creative arts therapists.

Professional affiliations: Arts & AGEing KC, Heart of America Chapter Alzheimer’s Association,
University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center, Soundscapes Music Therapy, The Golden Experience
Drama Therapy, Professional Storytellers, Authors, Dementia Advocates, AAKC Visual Arts Studio, Prairie
Elder Care.

This workshop is made possible through a grant from Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area and the
support of Shawnee Town 1929 Museum.
