Park Day offers Hands-on Civil War Preservation

Just as 150 years ago volunteer recruits descended on the town square that became the battlefield of Lone Jack in August 1862, on March 31 volunteers again will descend on that hallowed ground. This time though instead of squirrel guns and revolvers, volunteers will wield leaf rakes, mops and trash bags to do battle with winter’s detritus of debris and dirt as they clean and restore the battlefield, museum and cemetery along with the recently acquired historic Cave Hotel for our sesquicentennial year.

The Lone Jack Historical Society needs your help. Maintaining and keeping the site in good condition is a rewarding, but time-consuming, job. Historical society volunteers continually look to improve the site to make it more accessible, enjoyable and informative. The 16th annual Park Day is a hands-on preservation event sponsored by the Civil War Trust, underwritten with a grant from HistoryTM and endorsed by Take Pride in America, a division of the U.S. Department of Interior, to assist local groups with maintaining Civil War sites.

This is an excellent day for families to volunteer together and learn about their local history. Volunteers are needed to clean up limbs, brush and hedge apples, rake the cemetery and flower beds, dust, mop floors and wash windows at the museum and Cave Hotel among other jobs.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 31, at the Lone Jack Civil War Battlefield Museum, ½ mile south of Hwy. 50 exit. Clean up begins at 9 a.m. Volunteers receive a t-shirt. Lunch will be provided to volunteers. After lunch we will take a tour of the Cave Hotel. Clean up should be finished by around 2 p.m. To volunteer and reserve lunch, please call Alinda at (816) 805-1815. Please remember to bring gloves and dress for the weather.
