Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Sgt. Isaac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S Truman

In February 1946, a decorated African-American World War II veteran, in uniform, was removed from a bus, beaten and blinded. When news got to President Harry S. Truman in the White House, he was outraged. The incident resulted in the first presidential commission on Civil Rights. An all-white jury acquitted the police officer who beat the soldier. The presiding judge was a changed man after the trial. Federal District Judge Richard Gergel is the author of "Unexampled Courage".
