    SOLAR ECLIPSE WEEKEND AUG 19-20-21-2017

    The Museum is stepping back in time for the Aug 21 Solar Eclipse . Sat( 10am to 4pm ) ... Saturday night a ghost adventure with PRI.     Partisan Paintings: George Caleb Bingham and the Election of 1844 (Missouri Valley Sundays)

    American expansionism was an issue in the 1844 presidential election. The Democratic Party supported Texas annexation and the Whigs adopted an anti-expansion platform. Democrat James K. Polk defeated Whig Henry Clay to become the 11th U.S. president. Missouri artist/politician George Caleb Bingham, feared Polk's policies. Art historian Joan Stack explores how his two 1845 paintings, The Concealed Enemy and Fur Traders Descending the Missouri, may have reflected that anxiety. RSVP to attend....details >>

    Battlefield Tour With John Brown and His Free State Militia

    As part of the Civil War on the Western Frontier activities commemorating the 154th anniversary of Quantrill's Raid on Lawrence, Kansas, there will be a special tour of the Black Jack Battlefield. It will be conducted by Kerry Altenbernd as John Brown, assisted by members of the 13th Kansas Infantry reenactor group serving as his civilian Free State militia. Maybe a few proslavery men will be there too....details >>

    Battlefield Tour with John Brown and His Free State Militia

    Kerry Altenbernd - named a notable Kansan for portraying John Brown - assisted by the 13th Kansas Infantry Regiment reenactor group, serving as the civilian Free State militia, and a few proslavery men too, provides a battlefield tour. Black Jack Battlefield is the site of Brown's attack on a pro-slavery militia led by Henry Clay Pate June 2, 1856. Reenactors will be camping on site; come early and visit with them.
