    This Memorial Day weekend, bring your family to visit Fort Scott National Historic Site as we honor our nation’s fallen heroes. Experience sights, sounds, and smells of a frontier military fort.     Memorial Day Weekend Event

    Immerse yourself in the world of a 19th century frontier military post. Watch and listen as the blacksmith uses fire and an anvil to transform iron into everyday objects, take a ride on a horse drawn carriage, hear the crack of rifles and the boom of artillery as soldiers demonstrate the use of small arms and artillery.     Captured: The Extraordinary Adventures of Colonel Hughes

    Eighty thousand Kansans served in World War I; 227,000 in World War II. We pay tribute to all Kansas soldiers by telling the story of Kansan James Clark Hughes. He served from 1917 to 1948 in the U.S. Army, and fought in both world wars. He left detailed records of his time in service; he photographed battlefields and towns in Europe; recorded his daily survival as a Japanese Prisoner of War; and saved many belongings from the wars later donated to this museum.     The League of Wives: Vietnam’s POW/MIA Allies & Advocates (Exhibit)

    In the 1960s, POW/MIA wives bucked government protocol and challenged the traditional role of “military wife.” These courageous women organized to form the National League of POW/MIA Families. They worked with Congress and the Nixon administration to demand the safe return of their husbands. This special exhibition features documents, photos, oral histories and memorabilia from the Dole Archives, personal collections of POW/MIA families, and other institutions.
