    Reconstruction and Industrial Development along the Kaw – Post Civil War

    After the Civil War and the burning of Lawrence, Kansas, by William Quantrill on August 21, 1863, the town rebuilt and thrived. Learn about the businesses along the Kansas River after 1865: Bowersock’s dam, mill and power plant, the barbed wire factory, a commercial fishing industry, the Graeber boat rental fleet and others.     Bleeding Kansas Play

    Join an energetic 1850s town hall meeting where historic reenactors bring “Bleeding Kansas” to life. This meeting reflects the time settlers voted to determine if their new state constitution would allow or prohibit slavery. Tour Historic Lecompton including Constitution Hall, Territorial Capital Museum, Old Jail, and Territorial Democratic Headquarters.     Deep Water in the Tabernacle

    The local corporation that sponsored the residential Chautauquas in Ottawa’s Forest Park (1883-1914) had an uneasy relationship with the river. It provided a scenic backdrop for the lectures, choirs, and festive parades during the Assembly sessions. Visitors could steam up the river to “Wheeler’s Grove” at the head of The Island on a little steamer named Gertie and walk the riverside. But the threat of floods and the floods themselves caused the Assemblies to be delayed, postponed, or cancelled....details >>
