Landscape
The Power of Place

Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area is a distinct landscape defined by its geography---a fabric of rivers, hills, valleys, soils, and vegetation. Natural landscape shaped human history across the vast expanse of Freedom's Frontier. The landscape affected the village, trade, and hunting patterns of Indian people; the location of trade centers; the placement of overland trails; the settlement patterns of whites; the movement of troops, Bushwhackers and Jayhawkers during the Border War/Civil War and post-Civil War economies.
