Ragtime Music at FCHS Annual Meeting

The 76th Annual Meeting of the Franklin County Historical Society will be held Sunday, January 27, at 2:00 p.m., at the Franklin Co. Records and Research Center, 1124 W. Seventh Street Terrace.

The events and accomplishments of 2012 will be reviewed and a slate of new trustees will be elected. The Volunteer of the Year will be recognized as well as the 52 others who have provided over 1900 hours of volunteer work for the FCHS in 2012.

The program will be presented by retired Cass Co. MO Historical Society Director Carol Bohl and her former student Brian Hawkins.

Carol had Brian in 8th grade several years ago, and together they developed a research project for the History Day program. Building on Brian’s interest in ragtime music, which was born in western Missouri, they interviewed old musicians and delved into the story of ragtime. Brian won his local and state competitions and got 3rd place at National History Day in Maryland.

Now a graduate student at the KU Department of Art and Design, Brian has maintained his interest in and love of playing ragtime mu-sic, and he will present a live performance that will trace the path of popular music from the Civil War to ragtime at the turn of the 20th century. Brian will provide a concert of ragtime music that will delight all in attendance.

Refreshments will be served and the public is invited. In the event of inclement weather on Jan. 27, the annual meeting will be postponed to Feb. 2.
