Jackson County Parks + Rec Presents "Thunder on the Border" at Missouri Town 1855
Jackson County Parks + Recreation invites you to explore the explosive atmosphere that engulfed western Missouri in the days prior to the Civil War as Missouri Town 1855 presents “Thunder on the Border.” The authentic antebellum architecture of Missouri Town provides a perfect venue as our professional staff and volunteers reenact the conflict between pro-slavery and abolitionist residents. The strife frequently divided families and communities as hostilities became common.
Visitors will be able to see the activities common to everyday life in the 1850s shattered by armed Jayhawkers and Border Ruffian’s in an era that would be known as the Border Wars. The Border Ruffians camp will be open to visitors and skilled reenactors will provide insight into this turbulent time. Skirmishes highlight the day-long event that dramatically portrays the drama of this difficult period of American history. New this year for visitors is a depiction of a Civil War funeral.
As our nation continues the sesquicentennial commemoration of the Civil War, “Thunder on the Border” provides a perfect opportunity for families to experience the drama and hardships of life in the late 1850’s in western Missouri.
