Westport Historical Society Presents The Abolitionists as part of the Created Equal Series

Kansas City, MO (May 21, 2014) - The Westport Historical Society will host three Created Equal events during the month of June. Created Equal is a series of films focused on civil rights topics. The first event features the film The Abolitionists, and will be held at the Carnegie Building in Lawrence, KS, where the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area offices are located.

  • June 3   7 p.m.   Lawrence, KS   Carnegie Library, 200 W. 9th - Film Screening of The Abolitionists with discussion led by Daniel L. Smith, noted historian of the Border War era and Civil War on the Border, along with Frederick Douglass and John Brown, who will give insight into the people behind the movement.
  • June 14   2 p.m.   Kansas City, MO   Westport Library, 118 Westport Rd., Film Screening of Slavery by Another Name. The 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution declared slavery illegal, but many freed men would face another kind of bondage. Shawn Leigh Alexander, Associate Professor, University of Kansas History Department and Director of the Langston Hughes Center leads a discussion of Radical Reconstruction, the prison lease system, and other important topics.
  • June 22   3 p.m.   Kansas City, MO   All Souls Unitarian Church, 4501 Walnut St, Film Screening of The Loving Story. Virginia residents Richard and Mildred Loving were married in Washington, D.C. in 1958. When the couple returned home to Virginia, a nine year battle to have their marriage recognized began. Their struggle would take their case to the Supreme Court. A panel discussion composed on interracial couples follows this important film.

These events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
