Triple anniversary commemorates local grit, determination:
150th anniversary Order #11, 6-Man Massacre, reenactment at Cave Hotel

Fifty years ago Jackson County Parks + Recreation fulfilled the long-held and hard-fought dreams of Lone Jack residents when they opened the doors to the Lone Jack Civil War Museum. Those residents, many from founding families, felt they had a story to tell of a time in American history as important in 1963 as it was in 1863; and still as important today in 2013.

Stepping back to the desperate time of the Civil War, we remember and honor the courage, grit and determination of the families caught up in Ewing’s 1863 issuance of Order #11. We especially honor the women, who as mothers and wives, were left as heads of households to bear the brunt of Ewing’s order. Everyone is invited to a 150th anniversary reenactment at the Cave Hotel of this infamous order.

Students find memorizing history through names, dates and decisions made as boring and unappealing. More, it is a disservice to our country and to future generations who will need to appreciate their collective responsibility as citizens to sustain our democratic republic.

It is essential that we understand our history; how earlier generations grappled with critical issues of their time, how they shaped their country and how they maintained freedom for the next generation. That is the history the Lone Jack Historical Society wishes to tell through programs, events and museum exhibits. By understanding the extraordinary story of our town’s people during those turbulent times, we can find the courage to face current challenges.

Dedicated Lone Jack history buffs have been instrumental through five decades in keeping alive the memory of Lone Jack’s story. This year we hale the museum’s golden anniversary with a commemorative salute to the museum’s opening. Speakers include county and Truman Library officials and a special appearance by President Harry Truman, portrayed by Raymond Starzmann, whose interest and dedication made possible the museum’s opening.

The traditional Boy Scouts pancake breakfast kicks off the morning at 7:00 am at the Baptist church across from the park. A short parade will start at the high school and wind through Blue & Gray Estates, past the museum circling back to the high school. Entry participation is by invitation only.

Re-enactors again will help us honor the fallen who did not survive the hellish hours of battle 151 years ago with their popular and humbling memorial service and wreath laying ceremony.

During the lunch period, the Lee’s Summit American Legion Post #189 will educate us in the proper disposal for our national flag. The historical society invites anyone with a flag that can no longer be flown to bring it to Commemoration to have legion members properly dispose of their flag.

The Cave Hotel two first floor rooms will be open during Commemoration. One will be decorated in period style. The other room will have a photographic timeline of Lone Jack history.

For information about Commemoration, watch the historical society’s website at www.historiclonejack.org or visit our Facebook page. To volunteer, contact historical society president, Alinda Miller, at 816.805.1815 or president@historiclonejack.org.
